Glass Painting Masterclass

At the masterclass, participants will create a work using the shamail technique. A shamail is a wall panel featuring a Quranic inscription against a rich ornamental background. Traditionally, shamails were backlit with foil. Today, this technique is also used to create secular works, such as landscapes, still lifes, and narrative paintings.

Masterclass participants will select a suitable sketch, trace it onto glass with a marker, and then paint it with gouache. Candy wrappers and foil will be used to bring the work to life and create effects of shimmer and glow.
